"I hope that by increasing the capacity of retention ponds and reservoirs and by procuring mobile water pump units, we can prevent flooding in this area."
Sidoarjo, East Java (ANTARA) - Indonesian Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti has planned to increase the capacity of retention ponds and reservoirs around Porong Street in Sidoarjo, East Java, to help manage rainwater and prevent potential flood damage.

"The Sidoarjo Mud Control Center (PPLS) plans to increase the capacity of the retention ponds and reservoirs around Porong Street. We are still studying it in depth," she remarked during a visit to the Ketapang Reservoir in Porong, Sidoarjo District, on Friday.

She explained that when floods inundated the area on June 17, five retention ponds and six water pumps around the area were functioning properly.

The flood that inundated several points on the highway connecting Sidoarjo District and Pasuruan District, was caused by extremely heavy rainfall and high tide.

In addition, she stated that in the future, the PPLS will acquire some mobile water pump units to help address flooding.

"I hope that by increasing the capacity of retention ponds and reservoirs and by procuring mobile water pump units, we can prevent flooding in this area," she noted.

Meanwhile, Head of the PPLS Maksal Saputra revealed that several points within the PPLS work areas experienced land subsidence due to soft soil conditions.

"Several points in the Porong area, including the highway and around the retention ponds, experienced land subsidence of up to 30 centimeters," he affirmed.

To mitigate flooding, the PPLS always carries out re-coating or patching and reinforcement of the retention pond walls every year.
