Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - A Malaysian tourist was evacuated from Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, after falling while hiking on Saturday morning, according to local police.

"The victim slipped and fell while descending toward Lake Segara Anak on Mount Rinjani," said First Inspector Nicolas Oesman, spokesperson for the East Lombok Police, on Saturday.

The tourist, identified as 47-year-old Nazril, sustained minor injuries and was assisted by fellow hikers and a porter to the nearby Sembalun public health center.

"The victim has received medical attention," Oesman confirmed, adding that the victim suffered bruises on his right arm, head scratches, and hip pain as a result of the fall.

Nazril began his hike on Thursday, June 26, along with 12 other tourists, starting from the Bawak Nao entry point in Sajang Village, Sembalun Sub-district, East Lombok.

The incident occurred during their descent to Lake Segara Anak after reaching the mountain’s peak.

“He slipped while trying to avoid porters crossing his path,” Oesman said.

Following a recent series of incidents on the mountain, the West Nusa Tenggara provincial government has announced plans to review hiking routes and regulations to improve safety.

Deputy Governor Indah Dhamayanti said on June 26 that the local government is preparing new policies in coordination with relevant stakeholders to minimize future risks.

The renewed safety push comes after the widely publicized death of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who fell into a ravine on June 21. Her body was recovered by SAR officers on June 25, after a difficult evacuation hindered by extreme weather and her remote location at the base of the Rinjani ravine.
