Karawang, West Java (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery factory megaproject in Java and North Maluku brings an additional US$ 6 billion in investments to Indonesia.

"Overall, the investment value of this project reaches US$5.9-6 billion, equivalent to around Rp100 trillion," Lahadalia stated during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Integrated EV Battery Industry Ecosystem project by the ANTAM-IBC-CBL Consortium at Artha Industrial Hills (AIH) here on Sunday.

Speaking in detail, the minister revealed that US$4.7 billion is invested in the factory site in North Maluku, while the rest of US$1.2 billion is for West Java's Karawang factory site.

"The project opens new jobs for eight thousand workers," he said, adding that it will indirectly open around 35 thousand additional jobs related to the industry.

Lahadalia also said that the multiplier effect of the project on the country's economy is expected to reach US$40 billion annually. "When the commodity price increases, the multiplier effect will also increase," he added.

The battery industry project is a collaboration between state-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM), Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and China-based consortium CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL).

It is being developed across its entire value chain, consisting of six subprojects — five located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, and one in Karawang, West Java.

The Karawang electric battery plant will be operated by joint venture company PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB). It is projected to have an initial capacity of 6.9 GWh in its first phase, expanding to 15 GWh in the second phase. Commercial operations are targeted to begin by the end of 2026.

In East Halmahera, ANTAM and Hong Kong CBL Limited (HK CBL) have established PT Feni Haltim (PT FHT) to develop a new energy industrial zone that includes a nickel mining project, a pyrometallurgical smelter with an annual capacity of 88,000 tons of refined nickel alloy by 2027.

In addition, the site will also include a hydrometallurgical smelter to produce 55,000 tons of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate annually by 2028, a Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) cathode materials plant with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year by 2028.
