Karawang, West Java (ANTARA) - Most buyers of electric vehicle (EV) batteries from the Integrated Electric Battery Industry Ecosystem project in Karawang, West Java, are domestic companies, according to Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) CEO Toto Nugroho.

He made the statement after the battery factory's groundbreaking ceremony, led by President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday.

The factory is being developed by a consortium comprising IBC, state-owned mining firm ANTAM, and Chinese company Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co. Ltd. (CBL).

Nugroho said that while the facility will primarily serve the domestic market, it also targets exports to several countries, including Japan, India, and the United States.

“If we look at the current conditions, around 30 percent of the production will be exported. However, this figure may change from year to year,” he said.

The Karawang plant is one of six integrated projects planned by the consortium. The other five are slated for development in East Halmahera, North Maluku.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the factory will be capable of producing EV batteries with a total capacity of 15 gigawatt hours (GWh), enough to power up to 300,000 electric vehicles.

He added that the factory is also expected to feature a battery energy storage system (BESS) to store solar power-generated energy.
