He stated that this approach is intended to uphold the principle of humane resolution, avoiding unnecessary casualties.
“The National Police emphasizes a soft approach through deradicalization programs for former terrorists and collaborates with religious and community leaders,” Prabowo noted in his speech during the 79th National Police (Bhayangkara) Day celebration here on Tuesday.
He further highlighted that the Police's humane approach has yielded positive results. One significant achievement was the successful deradicalization of Jamaah Islamiyah followers some time ago.
“We successfully encouraged 8,315 former Jamaah Islamiyah members to pledge allegiance and return to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI),” Prabowo stated.
He affirmed that while the humane approach is prioritized, the police will also take firm action such as arrests or crackdowns if softer efforts fail.
He believes this combination of methods has effectively thwarted acts of terrorism in Indonesia. This is evidenced by the absence of terrorist attacks in Indonesia in recent years.
“The world recognizes Indonesia is a safe country because it has recorded zero (terrorism) attacks from 2023 to June 2025,” he stated.
He assured that the police will continue working to maintain an environment free from terrorist attacks in Indonesia.
Earlier, Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), Eddy Hartono, emphasized the state’s continued presence in assisting former members of Jamaah Islamiyah.
He also explained that the agency is running a comprehensive deradicalization program outside of correctional programs by prioritizing a collaborative approach, national insights, and entrepreneurship programs.
