Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Fajar Riza Ul Haq has said that in the education sector, technology should only be used to boost educational progress, not as a replacement for teachers.

In a statement released on Friday, he underlined that one way teachers can maintain their role is by stimulating learning.

“They must have awareness to create a joyful, meaningful, and mindful environment,” he said while reviewing the readiness of community learning centers in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Friday.

Furthermore, he noted that the digitalization of education can accelerate improvement in basic literacy, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) literacy in Indonesia.

He affirmed that education in Indonesia is being digitalized through measures such as the distribution of smart boards to educational institutions, including community learning centers.

“The President believes that the digitalization of education will accelerate the increase in our basic educational literacy, especially STEM,” Haq said.

The deputy minister emphasized that the distribution of smart boards is not merely about the provision of advanced technology, but also a part of educational transformation efforts to help students access learning that is deep and relevant to their lives.

Haq also underscored the importance of monitoring and evaluation to ensure that the devices that are distributed to educational institutions are utilized optimally.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is seeking to distribute as many as 15 thousand smart boards to schools across the country as part of the education digitalization program.

The ministry has readied a budget of Rp2 trillion (USD1 = around Rp16,194) for the program, which also includes training for teachers.
