Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Social Affairs Ministry announced that the first phase of Sekolah Rakyat (People's School) orientation will begin on July 14, 2025, preceded by free health checks for students, educators, and staff.

"On the first day, we will conduct a health checkup with the Health Ministry, followed by orientation as per the schedule arranged by each unit," Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf stated after a retreat with Sekolah Rakyat principals here on Saturday.

Yusuf explained that the orientation aims to familiarize students with their new school environment before learning activities commence.

The orientation will cover 100 People's Schools across the country. The minister ensured that all preparations for this first phase are nearly complete and ready to proceed as planned.

"On July 9, the Social Affairs Ministry will also host simulations at two (schools)— Handayani Center in Bambu Apus, East Jakarta, and Pangudi Luhur Integrated Center in Bekasi—to ensure technical aspects are in check," he elaborated.

Sekolah Rakyat's curriculum includes core subjects, as well as additional components such as character building and extracurricular activities, designed to develop smart, patriotic students with strong values, he elaborated.

The official launch with President Prabowo Subianto will be scheduled according to the head of state's availability, but the minister confirmed that the schools will begin operations on July 14 so children can start studying immediately.

The minister stated that the first phase of the program will cover 100 locations across Indonesia and is expected to cater to an estimated 9,700 students from underprivileged families.

Moreover, all operational costs of the program, such as students’ education, boarding, meals, and learning tools, will be covered by the government.

Yusuf expressed confidence that the program will be implemented on time. The government is also preparing 100 additional school locations, including the ministry’s building assets and the Manpower Ministry’s training centers.

At least 200 schools are expected to become operational in 2025, the minister added.

He had also affirmed that the schools are intended not only for underprivileged children from urban areas but also for children from remote and indigenous communities, such as Jambi's Anak Dalam people.
