Jakarta (ANTARA) - The "Jakarta Dalam Warna" (Jakarta in Colors) event is part of an effort to establish Jakarta as a city of culture, with a special emphasis on Betawi heritage, according to Governor Pramono Anung.

"Events like this should not only be held during major celebrations. They must become part of daily community life," Anung said during the event at the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout in Jakarta on Sunday.

He emphasized that the event reflects the Jakarta provincial government’s commitment to promoting Betawi culture as a source of pride for its residents.

Anung added that the push to strengthen Jakarta’s cultural identity has become even more relevant following the enactment of Law Number 2 of 2024 on the Jakarta Special Region, which places greater emphasis on cultural development.

The Jakarta government, he said, is working to improve public spaces and create a safe and comfortable environment for all residents, including both newcomers and long-time citizens.

To that end, Anung stressed that Betawi cultural elements should be present beyond large-scale events, and integrated into everyday community life.

"That is why I’ve made it mandatory for all official events to feature Betawi cultural elements, so that the people of Jakarta can genuinely experience and appreciate their own heritage," he said.

Thousands of silat martial artists and dancers from various schools and studios across Jakarta participated in the event on Sunday, performing around the HI Roundabout.

The performers entertained the crowd with martial arts demonstrations, including breaking concrete blocks and steel plates, as well as traditional dances.

The event coincided with Car Free Day (CFD) along MH Thamrin–Sudirman streets, a weekly initiative where residents gather to exercise and enjoy vehicle-free public space.
