Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment said it will monitor waste management in North Jakarta in the coming period and has invited stakeholders, including producers, to support the effort.

“All of North Jakarta is now under the supervision of the Governor (of Jakarta) and the Minister in order to resolve its waste management issues as quickly as possible,” Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said here on Sunday.

He made this statement when visiting the waste and wastewater facilities in a big mall in North Jakarta.

Nurofiq noted that North Jakarta has been designated as a pilot project for good waste management, not only for Jakarta City but also as a model for other regions across Indonesia.

Success in managing waste in North Jakarta is expected to be replicated in other parts of the country as part of the government’s effort to reduce the volume of waste sent to final processing sites (TPA).

The government aims to achieve 100 percent waste management by 2029.

“If we can resolve (the waste issue) in North Jakarta, the rest will not be as difficult,” he remarked.

North Jakarta has been prioritized due to its dense population and coastal geography, which presents various complex environmental challenges.

Minister Nurofiq stated that in the near future, all relevant stakeholders, including area managers and producers, will be invited to jointly address the waste issue in North Jakarta.

According to the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), Jakarta reported a total of 3,171,247 tons of waste in 2024, with North Jakarta contributing 509,694 tons.

On average, around eight thousand tons of waste are generated daily across the city, most of which ends up at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).
