Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment will step up supervision of traditional market areas to ensure they manage waste properly.

“We must tighten waste management from upstream, including traditional market areas,” Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said while inspecting the Teluk Gong Market in North Jakarta on Wednesday, according to a statement received here on Thursday.

He conveyed his ministry’s commitment to conduct a further evaluation and systematic verification of the waste management system at the market.

This is aimed at creating an optimal traditional market waste management model that can be replicated in other locations.

The minister also lauded the efforts made by the market’s managers, vendors, and environmental partners to handle waste generated in the market.

The Teluk Gong Market generates 4 square meters of waste every day, comprising organic waste (35 percent), inorganic waste (63 percent), and hazardous and toxic waste (2 percent).

The market has implemented a waste sorting system to divide the handling of organic and inorganic waste.

Organic waste is processed into fertilizers, while inorganic waste is managed collaboratively, including through its collection and sale.

However, Nurofiq emphasized that waste management still needs to be improved to cover all aspects sustainably, both for organic and inorganic waste.

The Ministry of Environment has said that it will focus on reducing waste in Jakarta, considering the high waste generation in the province and its readiness for implementing waste management measures.

According to the Environment Ministry’s National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), 34.2 million tons of waste was generated across Indonesia in 2024, based on reports from 317 districts and cities. Of the total, only 20.4 million tons of waste was managed.

In Jakarta alone, the total amount of waste generated in 2024 stood at 3.17 million tons.
