Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has tasked Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) with overseeing the continuation of plans for a high-speed railway linking Jakarta and Surabaya, East Java.

In general, the plan aims to extend the existing route, which currently runs only as far as Bandung, West Java.

"Mr. President has assigned us at the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development to help monitor the extension of the fast train system, from connecting Jakarta only with Bandung to reach Surabaya," AHY remarked at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday (August 13).

The minister emphasized that extending the high-speed railway would significantly boost the mobility of people, goods, and services across Java Island by linking regions in less time.

He remarked that the government also intends to apply a transit-oriented development concept in areas around high-speed train stations to encourage equitable development through the emergence of new settlements and economic centers outside the Greater Jakarta region.

However, AHY stressed that the plan is still in its initial stage, requiring in-depth studies to ensure effective and efficient execution. He noted that lessons are being drawn from the Jakarta–Bandung Whoosh high-speed trains, developed in cooperation with China.

"We are determined to make the plan a success, ensuring that it will face no major technical or budgeting problems," he remarked.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the government is open to forging collaboration with domestic and foreign partners interested in contributing to the plan with their capabilities.

The minister then drew attention to the importance of a sound level of synergy among ministries and other central government institutions and regional governments to properly execute the major transportation project.

"Of course, we need time," he stressed.
