Jakarta (ANTARA) - Following the United States’ threat to slap an additional 10 percent tariff on BRICS members, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that Indonesia will monitor the situation since it is still negotiating the US reciprocal tariffs.

The global economic situation is still dynamic due to world events, including the reciprocal tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, she observed here on Monday after a meeting with the House of Representatives.

Indrawati said that the government has taken the global dynamics into consideration while making the basic assumptions for the 2026 State Budget Plan, as the outline of macroeconomic framework and fiscal policy.

However, she assured that the government will draft the plan carefully by taking domestic and global factors into account.

“We will see. Today, Mr. President (Prabowo) is in BRICS meeting with world leaders, and then US President Donald Trump stated that BRICS is not supporting the US, hence the threat of tariff imposition,” she said.

Trump posted about the additional tariff on Truth Social on Sunday.

“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” he said.

He made the statement amid the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On a separate occasion, Trump said that letters outlining the tariff or trade agreements with some countries will be sent starting 12 p.m. Washington time on Monday.

He criticized BRICS’ move to reduce dependency on the US dollar, saying that it is impossible for BRICS to replace the greenback in international trade. He added that if BRICS members persist in designating their own trade currency, he will impose a 100 percent tariff.

Talk of de-dollarization and the move away from the dollar has been on the rise for a few years now, particularly after the US sanctioned Russia following its strikes on Ukraine in 2022.
