Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has expressed full faith in its teams negotiating the reciprocal tariffs with the United States amid President Donald Trump’s warning to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on BRICS members and allies.

“We trust our negotiators who are currently in the United States,” Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said on Monday.

BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Over time, the bloc has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.

Kartasasmita said that the tariff negotiators assigned to the US have the best reciprocal targets for Indonesia.

He added he is confident that Indonesia is important for the United States’ economic advancement.

“I think the US government will eventually be more flexible, more dynamic toward our interests. Indonesia is quite an important country for the US in (terms of) geoeconomics, economy, trade, and others,” he expounded.

However, he said that additional tariffs would affect Indonesia.

Regarding the diversification of the domestic product market, the minister informed that currently, the exports of domestic goods are in a good position, which is vital for economic growth.

“There are four main keys to the economic movement: the first is household consumption, the second is investment, followed by exports and government spending,” he added.

Earlier, President Trump had threatened to slap an additional 10 percent tariff on any country that supports the “anti-American policies” of the BRICS group.

“There will be no exceptions to this policy,” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday.

The statement came as leaders of the BRICS countries gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for their annual summit.

In a separate post, Trump announced that his administration will begin sending letters notifying countries of trade deals at 12 p.m. Washington time on Monday.
