With this, the total death toll in the ferry mishap has reached 12, with the number of survivors recorded at 30. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) on Wednesday extended the search for 23 passengers who remain missing, citing humanitarian grounds.
According to head of the Basarnas Bali-Office, I Nyoman Sidakarya, the two bodies were found by fishermen from the Pabuahan hamlet of Banyubiru village, Negara sub-district, Jembrana district.
They were fished out of Bali waters about two kilometers away from the village and taken to Negara Public Hospital before being handed over to Basarnas in Banyuwangi, East Java, for identification, he said.
The first body was found by four fishermen, identified as Supardi, Saidin, Husnan, and Lukman, around 6 a.m. local time, he informed. One hour later, the second body was retrieved by Miftahul Rahman alias Anif, he added.
Wahyu Setia Budi, a local SAR coordinator, earlier said that the roll-on/roll-off ferry was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles when it left Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, East Java, at 10:56 p.m. on July 2.
The vessel sank en route to Gilimanuk Port in Bali around 11:35 p.m. the same night.
In response to the tragedy, President Prabowo Subianto has instructed all relevant government agencies to make every possible effort to rescue the remaining passengers and crew of the ill-fated ferry.
