Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is supporting the production of natural-based medicines, including herbal remedies, standardized herbal medicines, and phytopharmaceuticals.

This was conveyed by Andi Rizaldi, Head of the Standardization and Industrial Services Policy Agency (BSKJI), during the signing of a cooperation agreement on Friday between the Ministry of Trade and PT Aurora Alam Khatulistiwa, a company involved in raw materials and traditional medicinal products.

He said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to advancing the downstream development of natural resource-based industries, including efforts to protect biodiversity as a source of natural medicine.

"This is a good momentum to promote the use of Indonesia’s biological potential to produce high-quality natural medicine products from local resources," Rizaldi added.

According to him, Indonesia has recorded 23,576 natural medicines to date, including 77 standardized herbal medicines and 20 phytopharmaceuticals.

Since the inauguration of the House of Wellness (HoW) facilities in February 2024, the Center for Standardization and Services for the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Packaging Industry has undertaken various preparations, including meeting regulatory requirements, conducting technical assessments, and exploring collaborative opportunities.

Under the agreement, the collaboration with Aurora includes the use of HoW facilities, such as buildings, machinery, and equipment, for the production of goods using natural raw materials.

It also involves knowledge and technology transfer to enhance capacity, skills, and expertise in areas covered by the partnership, Rizaldi said.

Meanwhile, the head of the center, Siti Rohmah Siregar, said her team is preparing to obtain Good Manufacturing Practices for Traditional Medicines (CPOTB) certification from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM).

She explained that the CPOTB certification would ensure traditional medicines are produced consistently, meet quality standards, and are safe for their intended use.

"A CPOTB certification will open up opportunities for the domestic natural medicine industry to produce market-ready products using the HoW facilities," she added.
