Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq plans to summon all company directors and heads of relevant agencies to find solutions to reduce air pollution in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.

"We will try to summon all directors, director generals, and deputies responsible for air quality in Jakarta," he stated during emissions testing for trucks transporting goods in North Jakarta on Tuesday.

The summons is part of his duty as the environment minister to oversee and ensure a healthy environment for the public.

Nurofiq noted that the move falls within the minister's authority, as stipulated under Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management.

According to Article 77, the minister is allowed to impose administrative sanctions on business operators if the regional government fails to implement administrative sanctions for serious violations in the field of environmental protection and management.

"State administrators are obliged to provide a proper environment for their communities, including us, as the primary administrators. We should be able to draft policies in regulating emissions," he stated.

The minister specifically highlighted concerns about the fuel oil (BBM) circulating in Jakarta, as it still fails to meet Euro-4 standards that ensure lower sulfur levels and better fuel quality.

He had communicated the request to improve fuel quality during a visit to the PT Pertamina oil refinery in Balongan, Indramayu District, West Java, on June 13.

His ministry will also impose sanctions on tenants or companies operating in industrial areas found to be contributing to air pollution in Greater Jakarta.

His side has so far conducted supervision in five out of the 33 industrial areas in Greater Jakarta.

"For the remaining 28 tenants, we will visit them directly and impose penalties," he stated.

Nurofiq noted that these tenants may face administrative sanctions if found to have violated environmental regulations and contributed to air pollution.
