Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment is continuing to carry out air quality monitoring in the Greater Jakarta area and coordinating with regional governments to verify air quality data.

As part of this supervision, when an ambient air quality monitoring station (SPKUA) detects a decline in air quality, the ministry verifies it with the regional government, the ministry’s director of air quality protection and management, Edward Nixon Pakpahan, told ANTARA here on Wednesday.

“They have to explain what is happening in their region,” he said.

For example, when one of the 110 monitoring stations shows the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) is in the unhealthy category, then the ministry contacts the person in charge, he informed.

If the reading remains unchanged for two days, then the ministry gets in touch with the official responsible for managing the SPKUA. If there is no change on the third day, the ministry officially summons a representative.

According to Pakpahan, the general public can monitor the air quality in their area through the ISPU.net website, which is managed by the ministry.

Public supervision has been deemed an important part of stakeholder cooperation for reducing air pollution risks in the Greater Jakarta area.

The Ministry of Environment is continuing to monitor industrial parks, especially those that are still using coal energy, considering there are around four thousand industrial chimneys in the Greater Jakarta area.

It has initiated action against 116 companies in the Greater Jakarta area for adding to air pollution during the 2023–2025 period.

The ministry is currently preparing a national road map for monitoring industrial parks as part of efforts to curb pollution.
