Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed that he and United States President Donald Trump agreed to elevate trade relations between their countries during a phone call.

He shared photos of the call on his Instagram account @prabowo just hours after President Trump announced his decision to lower tariffs on Indonesian goods entering the US from 32 percent to 19 percent.

"I had a very good call with President Donald Trump. Together, we agreed and concluded to take trade relations between Indonesia and the United States to a new era of mutual benefits," Prabowo wrote in the caption, as cited in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The head of state also conveyed Trump’s warm regards to the people of Indonesia.

Earlier, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he and Prabowo had reached an agreement that “opens up Indonesia’s entire market to the United States for the first time in history.”

He elaborated that the agreement, which he dubbed a “landmark deal,” stipulates that Indonesia will pay a 19-percent tariff for every product it exports to the US. In contrast, US exports to Indonesia will be exempt from tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Indonesia has also agreed to apply the 19-percent tariff to any trans-shipments from countries with higher existing tariffs, he added.

Trump further highlighted that Indonesia had committed to purchasing US$15 billion worth of US energy, importing US$4.5 billion in agricultural products, and procuring 50 Boeing aircraft, most of which are the 777 series.

“Thank you to the people of Indonesia for your friendship and commitment to balancing our trade deficit. We will keep delivering for the people of the United States and the people of Indonesia,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Head of the Indonesian Presidential Communication Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday that the 19-percent tariff is lower than those imposed on several other Asian countries.

He credited this achievement to the Prabowo-Trump call and the Indonesian negotiation team led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
