Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 19 percent import tariff imposed by the US President Donald Trump administration on Indonesian goods is among the lowest for Asian countries, according to the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) on Wednesday.

PCO Chief Hasan Nasbi stated that Vietnam previously faced a 46 percent tariff and, after negotiations, succeeded in lowering it to only the latest rate of 20 percent.

"Everyone lauded Vietnam for successfully negotiating with the US administration. But now, our government managed to negotiate from the initial (32 percent) tariff to 19 percent, lower than other Asian countries," Nasbi noted in a press conference here.

He explained that the newest tariff rate is the outcome of persistent negotiation efforts by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and the government team.

Direct talks between President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump were also instrumental in securing the US administration’s approval of the deal with Indonesia.

"We cannot regard this progress as a mere minor achievement; we achieve it through extraordinary works by our negotiation team," Nasbi affirmed.

The PCO head stated that President Prabowo will present his remarks about the US trade deal after concluding his overseas visit.

President Trump announced on Wednesday that all Indonesian goods imported into the United States will now be subject to a 19 percent tariff, following his direct talks with President Prabowo.

"Indonesia will pay the United States a 19% Tariff on all Goods they export to us," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The new tariff marks a reduction from the initial 32 percent rate Trump had announced in April, suggesting that Indonesia’s efforts to renegotiate the terms were at least partially successful.

Trump further revealed that Indonesia had committed to purchasing US$15 billion worth of American energy products and US$4.5 billion in US agricultural goods.

He also highlighted Indonesia's plan to buy 50 Boeing aircraft, primarily Boeing 777 passenger jets, though he did not specify the Indonesian buyers involved.
