"Working abroad is like studying while getting paid. You gain knowledge, broaden your experience and network, and of course, earn a significantly higher salary than at home," Karding remarked during a public lecture at Riau Islamic University (UIR) here on Wednesday.
The minister cited as an example that nurses in Japan can earn up to Rp25 million, or around US$1,500 per month, while in Germany, monthly wages can reach between Rp30 million and Rp50 million (around US$1,800 to US$3,000).
Similar opportunities are also available in the industrial, fisheries, and hospitality sectors.
Nevertheless, Karding reminded prospective migrant workers of the importance of maintaining ethics and good behavior while working abroad to uphold Indonesia’s reputation.
"We must adapt, obey local regulations, and respect the host country’s culture," he remarked.
He also emphasized the importance of learning foreign languages as essential for effective communication and preventing misunderstandings at work. Additionally, he underlined the need to develop relevant skills and competencies.
Furthermore, Karding advised migrant workers to manage their finances wisely, noting that many are unable to enjoy the fruits of their labor due to a consumptive lifestyle.
"Being wealthy is not just about having a high salary but about managing your finances wisely," he remarked.
On the same occasion, the ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UIR covering the strengthening of education, training, and assistance for prospective migrant workers.
The collaboration is expected to produce professional and dignified workers capable of competing internationally.
