Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto affirmed that the ministry had coordinated with the deans of several medical faculties and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin regarding the number of doctors required.
"Maybe next week, we will launch the acceleration task force," he stated during a meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Yuliarto emphasized that his ministry is collaborating with these partners to achieve the target of 60 thousand general practitioners by 2029.
Furthermore, Yuliarto highlighted that his ministry aims to produce 4,500 new specialist doctors through a mentoring system and by utilizing regional and government hospitals.
He affirmed that his ministry has also communicated with regional governments across Indonesia to provide medical school scholarships for local residents.
The minister further noted that the ministry has formed a committee with the Ministry of Health to streamline communication to ensure the programs run smoothly.
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto instructed the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to establish new medical faculties and increase the number of doctors in Indonesia.
He delivered this instruction while opening the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Bali International Hospital (BIH) in Denpasar, Bali, on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).
He stressed that the government must provide the highest quality health services to protect the people, adding that this can be achieved by ensuring an adequate doctor-to-population ratio.
