Jakarta (ANTARA) - Consumers in Indonesia are entitled to compensation if rice products they purchase are substandard or underweight compared to what is stated on the packaging, a trade official said on Friday.

Moga Simatupang, Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Compliance, said the right to compensation is guaranteed under Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection.

"Article 4 outlines consumer rights, including the right to comfort, security, and safety in consumption; the right to choose products; access to accurate information; the right to be heard; and the right to education," he said.

"These also include the right to be treated fairly and honestly, and the right to receive compensation," he added.

Simatupang said consumers can request compensation by providing proof of purchase, such as a receipt.

"Every time we make a purchase, we usually receive an invoice or receipt. That document serves as proof of the transaction and can be used to return or exchange the product at the point of sale," he said.

If compensation cannot be obtained directly, consumers can file complaints with consumer protection organizations or the Consumer Dispute Resolution Agency (BPSK).

"They can report the issue through consumer protection NGOs or the BPSK. As consumers, we must be empowered," Simatupang emphasized.

A monitoring effort by the Directorate General earlier this year found that 30 out of 98 packaged rice products across 62 districts and cities did not meet weight standards as of March.

Following these findings, the ministry issued administrative sanctions against rice packaging businesses under the Indonesian Rice Millers and Traders Association (Perpadi). An online mentoring session was also held on April 17 to raise awareness and address the issue.
