Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that Indonesia's food production remains safe and robust, crediting former president Joko Widodo for a smooth leadership transition that helped stabilize the food sector.

"I can say that our food production remains secure and robust," Prabowo said during a plenary cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He stressed that the food sector plays a strategic role in ensuring a nation's sovereignty, saying that no country can be truly independent without the capacity to produce its own food.

"It does not happen; it will not happen. No country can be free and sovereign without the ability to make its own food. Hence, I see food production as a strategic matter," he remarked.

Prabowo stated that strengthening food production capabilities would remain a top priority for his administration. He also warned that foreign parties could attempt to disrupt the sector in an effort to destabilize the country.

He pointed to a rise in the farmers' exchange rate and the government's food reserves — now at their highest level on record — as evidence that the government's food policies are heading in the right direction.

He also expressed appreciation for all stakeholders who have contributed to building national food security.

Prabowo, joined by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, led his eighth plenary cabinet session since taking office on October 20, 2024.

During the meeting, Prabowo commended Cabinet ministers for their hard work and teamwork.

"Without your hard work as a team, we would not have achieved what we have today. In such a short time, we have achieved so much," he said.
