Southwest Sumba, E Nusa Tengga (ANTARA) - Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara emphasized the importance of building basic facilities like toilets in schools to improve education quality in transmigration areas by teaching students about hygiene from an early age.

During a visit to monitor the rehabilitation of toilets and renovation of classrooms at SD Bondo Kawona Elementary School in a transmigration area in Southwest Sumba district, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday, the minister said that the development of school facilities is aimed at improving the quality of education and basic infrastructure in transmigration zones.

“We want children of transmigrant families to grow up in a healthy and decent environment, with access to proper education. Toilets are not just physical infrastructure, but they are also an essential part of learning to live hygienically,” Suryanagara stated.

He noted that SD Bondo Kawona is located in one of the priority transmigration areas in Sumba Barat Daya. The improvements in the area involve toilet rehabilitation and renovation of classrooms that were previously in a severe state of disrepair and could not be used.

The ministry has allocated up to Rp200 million or around US$12,200 per toilet unit, including for public junior high school SMP Negeri 5 Kodi, which also received similar support.

“We received numerous reports from regional transmigration offices that many schools in transmigration areas, especially their toilets and classrooms, require rehabilitation. Hence, this year the ministry is supporting improvements at 940 schools across Indonesia,” Suryanagara explained.

Meanwhile, Southwest Sumba Deputy District Head Dominikus Kaka said the central government’s support through the Ministry of Transmigration serves as real support for the education sector.

“This is crucial for enhancing the quality of human resources in our region, particularly in the transmigration areas,” Kaka said.
