“If they are willing, they can be relocated to the rusun. We have actually prepared for that,” he said here on Sunday.
For fire survivors in Bukit Duri, Tebet, South Jakarta, for instance, one of the closest options is the Rusun Pasar Rumput.
Karno explained that nearly 100 families are currently living in one tower there.
“This area (Bukit Duri) is close to Manggarai. We have the Rusun Pasar Rumput, one tower houses almost 100 families who were also fire victims. They now live there,” he explained.
However, Karno emphasized that relocation must be based on the residents’ own request, as the provincial government cannot force them to leave their original homes.
“We cannot force them. It has to come from the residents’ willingness, but we have prepared several Rusun facilities to anticipate events like this (fire incidents),” he said.
Previously, in August 2024, the South Jakarta city administration relocated at least 1,016 people or 254 families affected by a fire in Manggarai from temporary shelters to Rusun Pasar Rumput in the Setiabudi area.

According to the city government, interest among fire survivors to move into Rusun was high, given that the building is only 650 meters away from the fire location.
The recent fire in Tebet occurred on Saturday (July 19) at 06:20 a.m. local time on Kutilang Street, Bukit Duri.
A total of 16 families or 46 people were affected. Of that number, four people died and four others suffered minor injuries.
Currently, 10 families or 25 individuals are evacuating at a field in RW 01, Jalan Katik Street, RT 02/01, Bukit Duri, Tebet, South Jakarta.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. The burnt buildings included two residential houses and one boarding house.
