Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that 2,011 residents have been displaced following a 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Poso District, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday evening.

"Preliminary data indicates that 609 households, totaling 2,011 individuals, have been forced to leave their homes," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, during a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday.

According to BNPB’s preliminary findings, four residents sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

As many as 14 houses were severely damaged, and 21 homes experienced minor damage due to the earthquake.

One educational facility and one place of worship also suffered minor structural damage. These facilities are located in Tokilo and Tindoli Villages of Southeast Pamona District, and Pendolo Village in South Pamona District.

Muhari noted that damage assessments and data verification are still ongoing.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) earlier reported that the earthquake occurred at 8:06 PM WIB (UTC+7) on Thursday (July 24). The epicenter was located inland in the Poso region at a depth of 10 kilometers, precisely at coordinates 2.01 degree of Southern Latitude and 120.78 degree of Eastern Longitude.

BMKG classified the quake as relatively shallow and attributed it to activity along the Poso Fault Zone. The earthquake exhibited a strike-slip fault mechanism.

Following the main quake, at least 11 aftershocks were recorded. The strongest aftershock registered a magnitude of 5.5, while the weakest measured 2.4.

Tremors were felt across several regions with varying intensity. Poso, Kolonodale, and Mangkutana experienced shaking at intensity levels IV to V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, typically felt by most residents. Palopo, Toraja, Mappadeceng, and Bungku recorded intensities of III to IV MMI, while Palu experienced lighter tremors at II to III MMI.

BMKG confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.

Residents were advised to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.
