Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq explained that the revitalization is aimed at restoring the function of the study centers in providing operational support to the ministry in environmental management.
“We already have the centers in almost all universities. We want to restore their function to provide operational support,” he told the press in Jakarta on Monday after attending a rectors’ forum.
The forum, which was themed “The Collaboration of the Ministry of Environment and Universities in Environmental Protection and Management,” was attended by 41 rectors.
Nurofiq further said that the revitalized study centers will play a crucial role in supporting the ministry’s operational tasks at the central and regional levels. These tasks could encompass four main aspects: planning, assessment, supervision, and environmental law enforcement.
He highlighted the crucial role of academic institutions in environmental management, particularly in shaping effective and science-based environmental management policies.
One of the forms of support that they are expected to provide, he said, is in preparing planning documents, such as the Environmental Protection and Management Plan (RPPLH).
Speaking about the environmental assessment aspect, the minister stressed that academics’ role is essential in conducting strategic environmental studies and creating environmental approval documents.
They also have a critical role in monitoring business activities to ensure they do not cause damage to the environment.
