Jakarta (ANTARA) - SKK Migas and Medco E&P Natuna Ltd. (Medco E&P) have begun oil and gas production at the Terubuk Well Head Platform (WHP) M Project, lifting the total output at the Terubuk Field in Riau Islands.

“With the start of WHP-M operations, it means that the Terubuk Project is now underway,” deputy for exploitation at SKK Migas, Taufan Marhaendrajana, announced during the “First Oil Production of the Terubuk WHP-M Project” event in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The project has raised Terubuk’s production capacity to 6,600 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 60 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas. WHP-M alone contributes 3 thousand BOPD and 40 mmscfd of gas.

The Terubuk WHP-M in the South Natuna Sea Block B began initial oil and gas production on July 25, 2025 -- more than three months ahead of its original target in October.

The main deck of the offshore platform was readied in just six months, one month earlier than WHP-L, and much quicker than the offshore industry average of 10–12 months.

Medco E&P president director Ronald Gunawan said that the first production from WHP-M followed the launch of oil and gas production at the Forel and Terubuk fields in Natuna waters by President Prabowo Subianto.

He added that the milestone reflects a shared commitment to continuously increase national oil and gas output.

“It also marks a concrete step toward a more sustainable future,” he said.

All phases of the project -- from design to execution -- were completed entirely by Indonesian professionals, showcasing the nation’s talent in delivering world-class solutions in the energy sector.

The Terubuk Project, which includes WHP-L and WHP-M, has recorded over 750 thousand safe working hours without incident, reflecting Medco E&P’s strong commitment to high safety standards.

The WHP-M combines innovation and sustainability to boost operational efficiency and reliability, specifically by using solar PV technology for supplementary power, along with digital microwave radio and integrated control and safety systems for remote monitoring and control.
