Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the tsunami early warning issued after the 8.7M earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday morning was based on detailed modeling specific to Indonesia.

Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, stated on Wednesday that his agency took the initiative to model specific scenarios even though the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) did not list Indonesia as an affected area.

According to Daryono, the modeling indicated a potential tsunami alert status for 10 regions in eastern Indonesia.

Areas under alert status include the Talaud Islands, with an estimated wave arrival time of 2:52:24 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time), Gorontalo City at 4:39:54 p.m. WITA, North Halmahera at 4:04:24 p.m. Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT), Manokwari at 4:08:54 p.m. WIT, Raja Ampat at 4:18:54 p.m. WIT, Biak Numfor at 4:21:54 p.m. WIT, Supiori at 4:21:54 p.m. WIT, North Sorong at 4:24:54 p.m. WIT, Jayapura at 4:30:24 p.m. WIT, and Sarmi at 4:30:24 p.m. WIT.

"Alert status means wave heights are estimated to be less than 50 centimeters. Besides these 10 regions, their surrounding areas must also be vigilant," he noted in a press conference facilitated by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

BMKG monitoring results indicate that post-earthquake tsunami waves are currently propagating across the Pacific Ocean and have been detected in Pacific countries with varying wave heights.

Daryono reported that tsunami waves measured 39 centimeters in Kusiro, Japan; 31 centimeters in Hanasaki, Japan; and 84 centimeters in Kamchatka, Russia.

"It is important to monitor the direction and height of the waves before they reach eastern Indonesia," he stated.

The BMKG urges residents in coastal areas under alert status to stay away from the shorelines, especially in areas with bays or narrow straits prone to wave amplification.

Daryono explained that the government has learned from the 2011 Tohoku tsunami that warnings for waves under 50 centimeters still represent a threat that must be anticipated.
