Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, has said that the value of Indonesia’s batik exports totaled US$7.63 million in the first quarter of this year, marking significant growth for the industry.

“Our batik industry has been on a positive trend. Data from BPS (Statistics Indonesia) shows that in the first quarter of 2025, the total export value was recorded at US$7.63 million, or 76.2 percent higher than the corresponding period last year,” he highlighted.

Speaking at the Gelar Batik Nusantara 2025 event in Jakarta on Wednesday, the minister said that the trend aligns with the growing popularity of batik clothing as both formal and casual wear among Indonesian youth.

“This is a golden opportunity we must seize by driving design innovations, applying fresh marketing approaches, and ensuring consistency in product quality,” Kartasasmita emphasized.

He noted that the Indonesian batik industry has shown signs of transformation, as seen in the use of electric stoves and machines for painting and manufacturing batik, the indexation of batik dyes, and improvements in batik waste management.

These developments, he added, are vital for the batik industry to sustain itself, become more efficient, and enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.

He stressed that the Ministry of Industry remains committed to formulating and implementing strategic programs to empower the industry and its stakeholders.

For example, the ministry is developing batik reference books, providing facilities for geographical indications, advancing industrial digitization, revitalizing small and medium industry centers, enhancing industrial human resources, rejuvenating machines and tools, and expanding market reach.

The minister also underscored the importance of collaboration among the central and regional governments, business actors, and academicians to create a strong ecosystem for the batik industry’s sustainable growth.

“By strengthening the national batik ecosystem, we not only preserve the heritage of our ancestors but also lay a foundation for a better future for Indonesia’s fabric industry,” he said.
