Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq called for cooperation among all stakeholders to prevent forest and land fires (karhutla) in Jambi, where a peat ecosystem accounts for 10 percent of the country's fire incidents.

In a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday, the environment minister and head of the Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) reported that forest and land fires in Jambi Province had affected 421.77 hectares from January 1 to July 28, 2025.

"This figure raises concerns for all of us regarding the environmental conditions in Jambi, especially in the highly vulnerable peat areas," Nurofiq remarked.

Speaking while directly monitoring peat conditions and chairing the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) on Forest and Land Fire (Karhutla) Management in Jambi on Wednesday, July 30, he called for attention to land cover conditions and peat water levels during the aerial assessment of the forest and land fire risk.

At the Rakornas, he further urged the forum to serve as a strategic platform to strengthen cross-sector synergy in facing the dry season, which increases the risk of forest and land fires.

In his address, the minister emphasized the importance of early detection, resource preparedness, and strict law enforcement against those responsible for forest and land fires.

"We cannot work alone. Forest and land fire prevention is a shared responsibility. I appreciate the Jambi Provincial Government's commitment to actively coordinating forest and land fire management efforts in its region," Nurofiq explained.

On the same occasion, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, emphasized the importance of weather forecast-based preparedness.

Based on the Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS), the BMKG assessed that most areas in Jambi are relatively safe with low flammability.

"However, on July 30, August 1-3, and August 5, 2025, several areas in the central and eastern regions are categorized as flammable. Hence, early preparedness and mitigation are necessary," Dwikorita stated.
