“Our role is to ensure that national development efforts do not veer from the Constitution,” she said in her speech at the closing of the 6th PDIP Congress at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Badung district, Bali province, on Saturday.
The former president highlighted that the congress has decided that the once-ruling party will act as a critical, balancing faction that monitors the Prabowo Subianto government’s compliance with the 1945 Constitution.
She asserted that since Indonesia has a presidential system of government, the country does not recognize the dichotomy of opposition and coalition like parliamentary governments do.
However, misunderstanding about the notion remains prevalent among the Indonesian public, she noted.
“The model of democracy Indonesia adheres to is not one that endorses the existence of blocs of power. Instead, our style of democracy is founded on the people’s sovereignty and the Constitution,” she pointed out.
The PDIP, she added, is an ideology-driven party that fights for truth, sides with the people, and maintains a firm stance to ensure that rulers govern the country according to the Constitution and for the common good.
“The Constitution is above everything else,” the daughter of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, said.
During the congress, the former president was once again elected as leader of the PDIP, extending her uninterrupted chairmanship since founding the party in 1999. She is set to lead the nationalist party until at least 2030.
In addition to the election, PDIP cadres also used the national gathering to hold commission meetings to determine the direction of the party.
