Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta government and the Ministry of Public Works (PU) signed a memorandum of understanding as a strategic move to improve the effectiveness of urban waste management in a comprehensive, measurable, and sustainable manner.

Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) Asep Kuswanto stated that this collaboration will be crucial in overcoming the challenges of waste management in Jakarta, which generates over 7,700 tons of waste daily.

"This synergy includes developing a master plan and technical studies for waste management, providing technical guidance, and upgrading waste management infrastructure, including strengthening the Bantargebang Waste Management Facility," he stated in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The Jakarta Government is also committed to improving the operation and maintenance of all existing waste management facilities.

In addition, the initiative aims to strengthen waste management from upstream to downstream, starting with enhancing waste banks and the Jakarta Recycle Center, as well as developing a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) processing facility.

Furthermore, efforts will focus on optimizing the Waste-to-Energy Power Plant (PLTSa) at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST).

Meanwhile, Dewi Chomistriana, Director General of Human Settlements at the Ministry of Public Works, stated that the central government will provide technical guidance, starting with the development of the master plan, technical studies and planning, as well as technical support.

Subsequently, plans will be made for constructing leachate management facilities (liquid formed when rainwater seeps into and flows through piles of garbage), landfill gas collection system (a mixture of gases produced from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills), and landfill reinforcement at the Bantargebang Landfill (TPST).

She emphasized that this synergy will strengthen Jakarta's progress toward a safer, more modern, and sustainable waste management system.

Through this collaboration, the Jakarta government and the ministry are optimistic that waste management in Jakarta will greatly improve, supporting the city's vision as a sustainable global metropolis.
