Deputy Home Minister Ribka Haluk, who monitored the repeat voting at Ballot Booth 33 of SKB field in Jayapura district, praised all parties organizing and participating in the peaceful election.
Haluk said that the gubernatorial election ran peacefully and securely thanks to synergistic collaboration among election organizers and the active participation of voters and communities.
“Therefore, we do appreciate all involving and participating in it. This has shown all parties’ collective commitment to maintaining political stability and respecting democratic processes,” she said.
Registered voters who enthusiastically came to the ballot booths demonstrated their strong commitment to upholding democracy in a peaceful and orderly manner, Haluk said.
She expressed the hope that the people and the two pairs of candidates competing for the Papua governor and deputy governor posts will accept the decision of the majority of voters, she added.
The two competing pairs are Benhur Tommy Mano-Constan Karma and Mathias Fakhiri-Aryoko Rumaropen. Meanwhile, four candidates are running for the Boven Digoel district head and deputy head roles.
As reported earlier, the Papua police deployed 8,884 personnel to secure the repeat polling for the gubernatorial election in the city of Jayapura and eight districts -- Keerom, Sarmi, Mamberamo Raya, Supiori, Biak Numfor, Jayapura, Kepulauan Yapen, and Waropen.
The personnel were drawn from the Indonesian Military (TNI), National Police (Polri), and Community Protection Unit (Linmas).
They jointly secured all phases of the election -- starting from the delivery of election logistics to vote counting.
Meanwhile, a TNI officer said that two soldiers were assigned to guard every ballot booth in security-sensitive areas during the repeat voting for Papua’s gubernatorial and Boven Digoel district head elections.
The soldiers were deployed as a preventive measure to mitigate any security risk, commander of the XVII/Cendrawasih Regional Military Command, Major General Rudi Puruwito, said recently.
The vulnerable areas were located in the districts of Jayapura, Keerom, Mamberamo Raya, Waropen, and Kepulauan Yapen, he informed.
