Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto has emphasized that higher education and research must align with national development goals, particularly the eight priority sectors set by President Prabowo Subianto.

Speaking at the 2025 National Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (KSTI) in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday, Yuliarto outlined the eight priorities: food, energy, health, defense, maritime affairs, downstreaming and industrialization, digitalization (including AI and semiconductors), as well as advanced materials and manufacturing.

He stated that higher education institutions have two key roles: developing top talent and conducting research that addresses real-world challenges.

"These two roles are what we expect so that campuses truly become centers of research and development for local companies nearby. Campuses serve as centers of economic growth," he said.

Yuliarto noted that in other countries, universities serve as the backbone of industrial development.

"We are aligning ourselves accordingly. The development of talent in each sector must match Indonesia’s national priorities," he added.

Yuliarto stressed the need for stronger collaboration between universities and industry to identify relevant research topics. He also encouraged campuses to contribute to solving problems in both communities and industries — now and in the future.

KSTI 2025 is being held from August 7 to 9. More than 350 university leaders and over 1,000 of Indonesia's top researchers are taking part.

The convention focuses on integrating research, higher education, and industry across the eight priority sectors. These areas were selected to help Indonesia achieve technological self-sufficiency and enhance its global competitiveness.

The event features panel discussions, sharing sessions with global Nobel laureates and academics, and an exhibition of research and industrial innovations.
