Under the plan, 2,000 houses on 45-square-meter plots will be built for the general public, while 200 larger homes on 90-square-meter plots will be allocated to tribal chiefs in the province's eight districts.
Head of the Highland Papua BP3OKP Office, Hantor Matuan, said the directive reflects the president’s genuine concern for the region.
"We are truly grateful to God Almighty for leading the President to present this housing assistance to our province out of the many new autonomous regions in Indonesia, especially in Papua. This instruction certainly has our full support," he said.
Matuan described the initiative as evidence of the state's commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in one of Indonesia’s most remote provinces.
"For us, the aid of 2,200 housing units is not just any aid — it is a testament to the President's special attention to Highland Papua, a region considered far more isolated and harder to reach than other parts of Indonesia," he said.
He also expressed confidence that the housing project would stimulate economic growth, particularly with the central government's plan to build a 61-kilometer road linking Wamena in Highland Papua to Jayapura in Papua.
On Friday, Highland Papua Governor John Tabo confirmed that the order came directly from President Prabowo.
"We emphasize that the assistance of 2,200 housing units was not part of the district heads' proposals to the Ministry of Housing and Settlements, but a direct contribution from the President," he said, adding that the ministry will be tasked with carrying out the project.
