Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono stated that the leprosy elimination efforts require close collaboration between regional and central governments, involving both the health and social sectors.
"Therefore, our target for leprosy eradication has been raised to 111 regencies and cities by 2030," he remarked after a working visit to Tangerang District, Banten, on Thursday.
He explained that the first stage of leprosy elimination involves detecting its symptoms. Once the public can identify these symptoms, the Ministry of Health can promptly diagnose and initiate necessary treatment.
"We then provide leprosy chemoprophylaxis, a preventive measure against the disease, to those in close contact with leprosy sufferers," he remarked.
Harbuwono expressed optimism that with massive, multi-sectoral efforts, the goal of eliminating leprosy in 111 districts and cities by 2030 could be met.

Furthermore, the deputy minister noted that Indonesia currently ranks third in the world for the number of leprosy cases, after India and Brazil.
"Therefore, we have set a target. In accordance with WHO's stringent targets, we are striving to ensure optimal management," he affirmed.
Harbuwono emphasized that leprosy is among the 21 neglected tropical diseases worldwide that must be eliminated.
One way to achieve this is by maintaining a healthy environment for the community.
According to the deputy minister, several neglected tropical diseases can be eliminated if the community maintains environmental health, thereby preventing animals and wildlife in the environment from carrying viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens.
"Actually, treatment is currently available at community health centers, so there is no need to visit the hospital. You should go to the hospital if you have severe symptoms, such as severe disability. If you only have mild symptoms, we will try to treat you at the community health center," he stated.
