Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) member Melchias Markus Mekeng on Saturday voiced support for President Prabowo Subianto's flagship welfare programs, saying they have strong potential to boost public well-being and economic growth.

Mekeng's remarks came in response to President Prabowo's state address during the MPR's Annual Session on Friday, where he highlighted the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) and Sekolah Rakyat (People's Schools) programs.

"The president's speech was remarkable. These people-focused programs will strengthen our economy," he said in a statement.

He said the MBG initiative, aimed at improving children's nutrition, could also stimulate the agricultural sector by empowering farmers as food suppliers.

On Sekolah Rakyat, Mekeng noted its potential to break the cycle of poverty by ensuring access to education for children from low-income families.

He also praised Prabowo's emphasis on national unity and his firm stance against groups seeking to exploit state resources.

Mekeng welcomed the president's reference to Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution, which mandates that vital sectors of the economy be controlled by the state for the benefit of all Indonesians.

Legislators are committed to overseeing government programs to ensure they stay on course and serve the public interest, he added.
