A meeting attended by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Jess Dutton in Jakarta, Tuesday, discussed the ICA-CEPA negotiations, potential trade collaboration, and the progress of reciprocal tariff negotiations between both countries and the United States (US).
“This ICA-CEPA agreement is expected to open up greater opportunities for expanding trade in goods, services, and investment between Indonesia and Canada,” Hartarto said in a statement on Wednesday.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Indonesian and Canadian governments as a solid foundation for enhancing mutually beneficial bilateral economic relations, while also encouraging diversified cooperation across various sectors.
Ambassador Dutton expressed appreciation to the Indonesian government for completing all final stages of the ICA-CEPA agreement documentation.
He stated that the agreement is expected to serve as a momentum to advance cooperation in trade, energy, and security between the two nations.
Dutton also commended Indonesia’s progress in reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States, which resulted in a tariff reduction from 32 percent to 19 percent.
He further discussed the potential for enhancing trade and investment cooperation between Indonesia and Canada.
ICA-CEPA will mark Indonesia’s first comprehensive economic partnership agreement in the North American region.
The ICA-CEPA negotiations were concluded in December 2024, and the agreement is expected to be signed in either September or October 2025.
Indonesia and Canada have already signed a joint statement marking the conclusion of the ICA-CEPA negotiations.
Following more than two and a half years of discussions, Indonesia has successfully reached a comprehensive trade agreement with Canada. Through ICA-CEPA, market access for Indonesian products is expected to expand into the North American region, particularly Canada.
