Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed that no major structural damage was recorded following a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that rattled Bekasi and the Greater Jakarta area on Wednesday (August 20).

"Around 26 houses sustained minor damage, mostly older structures lacking steel frames. In addition, a school reported a ceiling collapse," BNPB Head Suharyanto stated in Jakarta on Thursday.

He confirmed that the earthquake caused no fatalities.

BNPB has dispatched a team to inspect post-earthquake conditions in affected regions, including Karawang District in West Java, located east of Bekasi District, where the quake’s epicenter was located.

Although Karawang District authorities did not declare an emergency, BNPB remains ready to assist if requested by the local government, Suharyanto noted.

"If they later request assistance from the central government, BNPB is ready," he remarked.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the 4.9-magnitude quake struck at 7:54 p.m. local time on Wednesday, with the epicenter located 14 kilometers southeast of Bekasi District, West Java, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Geology Agency confirmed the earthquake was triggered by movements along the Baribis Fault.

Although damage was minimal, public transportation services, including Jakarta’s Commuter Line and the Whoosh Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train, were suspended for several hours.

Several residents across Greater Jakarta reported being startled by the tremor.
