Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is intensifying its efforts to strengthen educational and research ties with the United States, aiming to boost academic exchange, joint innovation, and access to world-class institutions.

The initiative reflects the country’s broader strategy to elevate its global competitiveness through strategic international partnerships.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to sending hundreds of students and researchers to the U.S. annually during a meeting on Friday with Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Peter Haymond, here on Friday.

“Indonesia seeks partnerships with top-tier universities, including MIT, Harvard, and Stanford. Through programs like the Presidential Fellowship and Garuda Scholarship, we aim to send hundreds of students and researchers to study in the U.S. annually,” Yuliarto stated.

The two officials discussed expanding access to U.S. university qualifications, increasing the number of Indonesian students studying in the U.S., and strengthening joint scholarship schemes such as the Fulbright Program.

They also explored opportunities for joint degree programs, collaboration with U.S. universities operating in Indonesia, and the renewal of existing memoranda of understanding (MoUs)—particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Yuliarto encouraged the formation of strategic alliances between leading universities in both countries, including visiting professor programs and mentoring initiatives for Indonesian faculty.

Haymond welcomed Indonesia’s initiatives and expressed strong support for deeper collaboration between academic institutions in both nations.

“We are ready to provide information and guidance to help scholarship recipients choose the right universities and succeed in their studies,” Haymond said.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to enhance student and faculty exchanges, support joint scholarship programs, and expand academic cooperation in priority areas.

Looking ahead, the Ministry and the U.S. Embassy plan to update and streamline the MoU governing bilateral education cooperation and explore new mechanisms to facilitate joint degree programs and other forms of academic exchange.
