Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) on Monday launched cross-border QR code payments with Japan, allowing Indonesians and Japanese tourists to make cashless transactions via mobile phones.

"Starting today, we are implementing cross-border QR payments between Indonesia and Japan," BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said at the official launch in Jakarta.

The initiative enables around 500,000 tourists from both countries to pay in either nation using the Indonesian standard QR code system (QRIS), eliminating the need to carry rupiah or yen.

The implementation of QRIS in Japan is part of BI's collaborative effort to improve economic relations through digital integration. Similar initiatives have been carried out with Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

He expects that this collaboration can ensure simple and seamless bilateral transactions, he noted.

"We not only simplify transactions, but also establish a more inclusive digital economy, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises that serve as the backbone of our economy, as well as open up market opportunities for tourism, business trips, and become part of a more integrated global economy," he remarked.

In the early phase of QRIS implementation in Japan, it is eligible for 35 merchants in Japan, by scanning JPQR Global using a domestic e-wallet application. The coverage of QRIS in Japan will be expedited to facilitate simpler transactions for Indonesians in Japan.

Similarly, the approach is extended to merchants in Indonesia, so Japanese people can conduct transactions in Indonesia by using QRIS.

The implementation of Indonesia-Japan QRIS is a collaboration from BI, the National Payment System Association (ASPI), the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) of Japan, the Payment Japan Association (PJA), Netstars, and others.
