Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Agriculture is continuing to intensify the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination in a bid to prevent a surge in FMD cases in livestock.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the ministry, Agung Suganda, here on Tuesday, noted that the vaccination program is carried out in two periods in a year.

The vaccination in the first period, which ran from January to March 2025, was carried out with 2.1 million vaccine doses allocated. It was able to keep FMD cases under control, especially during the high traffic of livestock ahead of Eid al-Adha.

He further said that the second period is currently ongoing from June to September. Even though so far the realization is still low, the government is optimistic about boosting the achievement in one month.

"We have allocated 1.9 million vaccine doses for the second period. However, the realization is still at 31.4 percent," Suganda remarked.

In addition to intensifying vaccination, the Ministry of Agriculture is also carrying out various other strategies, including encouraging maximum implementation of biosecurity, especially for dairy cows, goats, sheep, and pigs, to prevent disease transmissions.

He also affirmed that the ministry is tightening supervision of livestock traffic by requiring animal health certificates issued by local offices.

The government also focuses on the collaboration of various stakeholders by involving universities, farmers, and the Indonesian Association of Veterinarians (PDHI) to raise awareness and independence in vaccination and handling animal health.

Indonesia has proposed nine provinces to be recognized as zones free of FMD without vaccination, comprising six provinces in Papua, Maluku Province, North Maluku Province, and East Nusa Tenggara Province. Those provinces are categorized as green zones in the national FMD control map.

"We are targeting a nationwide recognition that Indonesia has a controlled FMD management program in 2026, towards Indonesia that is free from FMD without vaccination by 2035," he said.
