Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has distributed 124,225 doses of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in the first phase of the distribution to stem the spread of the disease among livestock.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, said that for this year, the Ministry of Agriculture has prepared 4 million doses, which will be distributed in stages to 25 provinces with FMD cases.

"Of the 4 million doses prepared for 2025, 124,225 doses have been distributed to seven provinces and breeding units," he stated in a statement issued on Monday.

Another 3,225 doses have been provided to livestock breeding units.

According to Suganda, the distribution of vaccines is being carried out in stages based on requests from provincial offices. The ministry is targeting to distribute 400,000 doses in January, 1.2 million doses in February, and another 400,000 doses in March.

"Meanwhile, another 2 million doses are allocated for the second vaccination period from July to September 2025," he disclosed.

In response to the rise in FMD cases, the ministry allocated a budget for the procurement of vaccines made locally by the Central Veterinary Drug Laboratory (Pusvetma) in December 2024.

The same month, at least 51,200 doses obtained through donations were distributed to eight provinces, in addition to 65,000 doses distributed across various regions.

Pusvetma head Edy Budi Susila said that the vaccine distribution is expected to accelerate efforts to curb FMD cases in Indonesia.

The ministry's effort to distribute locally made FMD vaccines is expected to not only protect the health of livestock but also boost productivity and maintain food security.
