Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno emphasized that both university-based and hospital-based specialist education should not only meet national demand for doctors but also foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Speaking here on Wednesday, Pratikno noted that all forms of education—including specialist training—must integrate technology.

In the health sector, this includes telemedicine, genome sequencing, and AI-driven care.

“Ladies and gentlemen, once again, we must strive not to remain mere consumers of technology. That means conducting research—whether through universities or hospitals,” he said.

Pratikno argued that specialist education can contribute to both the health sector and the broader economy, citing opportunities in health tourism and medical research.

He pointed out that healthcare spending in Indonesia, as in many countries, exceeds the GDP growth rate, underscoring the need to harness technology to improve service quality and expand access.

“We must support both systems so they can conduct research, publish in international journals, and address health challenges through technology,” he added.

He described the two education models as complementary: university-based programs strengthen academic knowledge through research, while hospital-based programs, though rooted in clinical practice, can also produce strong researchers through empirical study.

This vision, he said, requires collaboration between central and regional governments. He praised local administrations and institutions that have committed to expanding access to specialist education.

“When we unite, we gain strength. Through collaboration, we find solutions. With our talents, we can tackle Indonesia’s health challenges,” Pratikno concluded.
