Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) brings both significant opportunities and new threats to the legal system.

During a public lecture at the Faculty of Law in Padjadjaran University, Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday (Aug 27), Mahendra stated that artificial intelligence may be sophisticated, but it is still born from a series of human-generated codes.

"Therefore, legal accountability remains with humans, not machines," Mahendra stated as confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.

He also highlighted the dilemma between the need for adaptive and progressive law and legal certainty.

He emphasized the importance of new regulations, increasing the capacity of law enforcement officers, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

According to him, artificial intelligence should not replace the function of legal judgment, which is the domain of humans.

"Law is not just formal logic. Therefore is conscience, there is a sense of justice that cannot be replaced by algorithms," Mahendra said.

He advised law students to equip themselves with multidisciplinary knowledge because this nation will always need human wisdom, so artificial intelligence will never replace the wisdom and integrity of a true law enforcer.
