The government will investigate the incident and ensure that the process is carried out transparently,
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan affirmed that the government will investigate the case of Affan Kurniawan, an online motor taxi (ojol) driver who died after being run over by a tactical vehicle during a protest.

The protest was sparked by Thursday’s rally at the Parliamentary Complex, which ended in Kurniawan’s death, as shown in widely circulated videos of the vehicle speeding toward the crowd in an attempt to disperse it.

“The government will investigate the incident and ensure that the process is carried out transparently,” Gunawan said on Friday.

The minister expressed regret over the tragedy and described the police’s handling of the protesters as inhumane.

He urged authorities to act with greater restraint when implementing security measures during demonstrations.

The protests, ongoing for several days, have grown increasingly chaotic, with large crowds gathering in several locations near the Parliamentary Complex, including Palmerah, Senayan, and Pejompongan.

The deadly incident reportedly occurred in Pejompongan.

The tragedy sparked public outrage and prompted protesters to gather at the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, where tensions escalated until Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) personnel intervened the following morning to restore calm.

Separately, National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo visited Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta to offer condolences to the victim’s family.

Head of the Police Professionalism and Security Division, Abdul Karim, confirmed that seven officers are currently under investigation in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto expressed his condolences and pledged that the government would ensure the welfare of Kurniawan’s family, with special support for his parents and siblings.

“On behalf of myself and the government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences,” the president said in a video statement.
