Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto pledged justice over the death of ride-hailing motorcycle driver Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle during a protest in Jakarta on Thursday (August 28).

Prabowo conveyed his condolences directly to Affan's parents during a visit to their home in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

"My condolences. Be well," Prabowo said to Affan's father.

"We trust you, sir," the father replied.

The head of state also expressed his condolences to Affan's mother and expressed his regret over the incident.

"My condolences, I deeply regret it," Prabowo said, holding the hand of Affan's mother.

"I never thought you would be here," the father replied to Prabowo.

The family also expressed their hope for a thorough investigation into this case.

"This is Affan's fate, but the family also demands justice," one of the family members said.

"Definitely. Definitely," Prabowo replied.

The President arrived at the funeral home on Friday at around 9:50 p.m. local time, accompanied by State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Without commenting to the media, the President immediately left the scene after expressing his condolences to the victim's family.

Regarding legal action against the officers involved, Prabowo had addressed the incident in an official statement. He expressed disappointment at the officers' actions, which he considered excessive.

"I am shocked and disappointed by the officers' excessive actions. I have ordered that last night's incident be thoroughly and transparently investigated, and that the officers involved be held accountable," he said in a video posted on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube account on Friday.

This incident triggered widespread national protests, including at the regional police office and the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) on Friday in several cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, and Makassar.
