Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta’s bus rapid transit system, Transjakarta, suspended all services on Friday after widespread protests in the metropolitan city led to damage at several key bus stops.

“Given the situation has not yet normalized, all Transjakarta services remain suspended,” Head of the company’s Public Relations and CSR Department Ayu Wardhani said on Saturday.

She said the Transjakarta Command Centre is closely monitoring developments before making a decision on when operations will resume.

Service updates will be posted through the TJ: Transjakarta mobile app and official social media channels, she added.

Wardhani also urged residents not to damage public facilities during protests, stressing the importance of shared infrastructure for daily commutes.

Transjakarta halted operations after reporting vandalism at seven bus stops across the city, with unrest continuing into early Saturday.

The affected stops include Bundaran Senayan, Polda Metro Jaya, and Senayan along Sudirman Road in South Jakarta; Senen TOYOTA Rangga, Sentral Senen, and Gerbang Pemuda in Central Jakarta; and Pemuda Pramuka in East Jakarta.

Several student groups, including the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) and the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI), staged a protest outside Jakarta Police Headquarters on Friday afternoon (August 29).

The protests erupted following the death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver who was struck by a police vehicle during a protest near the Parliament Complex on Thursday.

The unrest spread to multiple Indonesian cities while Friday’s protests were focused around the Parliament Complex in Central Jakarta and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters in South Jakarta.

However, violence escalated after nightfall, with rioters damaging public facilities in various parts of the city.
