"I urge all Acehnese to remain calm. We do not need to follow other provinces (by holding demonstrations)," Fadhlullah said in Banda Aceh on Saturday.
Demonstrations in Jakarta, which began on August 25 with demands for the dissolution of the House of Representatives (DPR), have since spread to other regions, resulting in the destruction of public facilities and even loss of life.
Fadhlullah stressed that Aceh is different from other provinces, highlighting its unique status and privileges.
He recalled how Aceh once staged demonstrations over the four islands issue, while other provinces did not.
"At that time, we demonstrated, but other provinces did not. So, Aceh is different," he remarked.
He emphasized that while he does not prohibit people from expressing their aspirations, demonstrations must be conducted safely, peacefully, and in accordance with regulations.
As a province that enforces Islamic law, Aceh should avoid violence or anarchy, he added.
"If you want to demonstrate, it must be done peacefully—there is no need for anarchy or violence," he said.
"I hope that all Acehnese, in line with the Governor's directive, will remain calm. God willing, we will get through this," Fadhlullah concluded.
